The Midwest Region does not have many public universities, including federal, state and municipal, different from other parts of the country, mainly the South and Southeast. Still, some of them appear among the best in Brazil in several rankings.

Mato Grosso do Sul is the state with the most institutions on our list, there are three, against two from Goiás and one from Mato Grosso and one from Brasília. In fact, the federal capital unit is considered one of the best in the country.

1 – UNB


It would be strange if the first position in the Midwest Region was not occupied by the University of Brasília (UNB), located in the federal capital and considered the ninth best public higher education institution in Brazil. Its foundation happened in 1962, still in the first years of creation of the Federal District.

It has four campuses, in Brasília, Planaltina, Gama and Ceilândia, in addition to the project to install one in Paranoá. Since its creation, the objective has always been to invest in teaching and research, being a Brazilian reference for courses in International Relations, Political Science, Economics, Law and Anthropology.

2 – UFG


The Federal University of Goiás (UFG) appears in the 20th position among the best institutions of higher education in Brazil, being the second placed in the Midwest Region.

Founded in 1960, it has more than 150 courses and receives more than 28 thousand students. It has its main campus located in Goiânia, but also with headquarters in Aparecida de Goiânia and Goiás, Campus Samambaia, Campus Colemar Natal e Silva.

In addition to graduation, it has options for those who want to study graduate courses. One of the highlights of the Federal University of Goiás is the fact that it has several libraries, gathering more than 350 thousand copies, including books, music CDs, vinyl records, maps, DVDs and even VHS tapes.

3 – UFMT


The Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) occupies the 33rd position among all the institutions analyzed, being the third best in the Midwest. Created in 1970, it is one of the most traditional in the region. Its headquarters is in the state capital, Cuiabá, and it also has campuses in other cities, such as Barra do Garças, Pontal do Araguaia, Sinop and Várzea Grande.

There are more than 110 undergraduate courses offered by UFMT, benefiting more than 25 thousand students. The Federal University of Mato Grosso was a pioneer in the area of ​​higher education in Brazil in the distance modality (EAD). The Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) was founded in 1979 and is one of the best educational institutions in the region, appearing among the 7 best public universities in the Midwest. The fifth best institution of higher education in the Midwest Region is the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD), located in the city of Dourados, in Mato Grosso do Sul. The State University of Goiás (UEG) is the second best in its state. It is new, founded in 1999, showing how the Midwest Region has been developing in relation to the training of professionals in recent years. Its administrative headquarters is in Anápolis, with 42 units spread throughout the state of Goiás.

7 – UEMS


The State University of Mato Grosso do Sul appears as the seventh best in the Midwest Region, occupying the 116th position among public institutions of higher education throughout Brazil. Founded in 1993, it is headquartered in the city of Dourados, with 15 campuses spread throughout the state of Mato Grosso.

Although it only came out of the paper in 1993, since 1979 there was a project for the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul to be constituted. Before that, there were serious problems with graduation, in addition to deficient elementary and high school.

The organization offers postgraduate, master’s and doctoral programs. One of the objectives of UEMS is to be closer and closer to the community, playing a fundamental role in the development of Mato Grosso do Sul.
